Pandemic response - Week 41 - Happy New Year!

Never ever, last March, would I have envisioned that I would still be blogging during a pandemic when 2020 became 2021!  41 weeks later and Canada/Ontario is strongly in the grips of a second wave that is actually proving to be worse than things were during the first wave!  The ‘good’ news is we now have a vaccine and we’re all hopeful that there might be a light at the end of this tunnel.  Realistically though, that will still be several more months coming.  That being said, here I am back in Bayfield and about to highlight the changes of yet another season...from fall to winter.

Ice, melting with bare grass and pine cones and those little white balls that look like styrofoam are actually snow pellets.

Despite all the amazing waves don’t forget it’s the end of December and that’s ice on the pier.  And look what else you can see on most of the days with a strong westerly wind!

It’s the first, and only, Christmas tree I’ve seen out at the road so far.  I think everyone is holding on to them, and the joy and festivity they bring for just that little bit longer this year.

No actual fridge needed to get ready for New Year’s Eve this year.  And since we couldn’t get together inside at all, friends and I had a little “Campy New Year” celebration for an hour or so, just at sunset, around a fire pit in the backyard.

Here it is - the final sunset, on December 31st, of 2020.  “Good riddance” - I say!

And then on New Year’s Day, with it being a little bit colder the night before, there was for the first time a little bit of snow and ice right at the shoreline in some places along the beach.  If you look hard you can see the ‘slush’ just starting to form at the top of the water...but it will only last if temperatures stay cold enough.

The thinnest layer of ice is what makes this driftwood look so shiny.

Although the steely blues and greys of winter are, in their own way, really beautiful to look at, this planter box of colour just jumped out at me as I was walking.

A little bit of freezing rain at night - just enough to have the snow sticking to the trees and bushes!  It was a very pretty sight to wake up to!

There won’t be too many more days with reflections

The Canada Geese were out in full force today - honking loudly and flying everywhere!

The snowfall that accompanied the freezing rain was just perfect packing snow, and snow people popped up everywhere...even on the pier!

And here we have the ‘snow rock band’ complete with guitarist, drummer and fans!

Snow on the beach today, and a bit of slush in some places at the shoreline, but temperatures above 0 are preventing any real freezing on the lake.

If you’re lucky, rainbow trout is what you can catch now.  I didn’t see anything being caught while I was there but earlier in the day several folks fishing were apparently successful.

It was a very grey day today so thought rather than taking ‘grey’ photos I would experiment a bit with my camera.

And here ends 2020 and Week 41!

This was a perfect spot to sit and relax...and as luck would have it, the sun broke through the clouds at just the right time.  Close up below, just in case you can’t see my chair.
