In some ways today was a quiet day for me and yet I also feel like I managed to make the most of the day.
Sundays really do have a very relaxed feeling here in Adelaide and I decided to start my day at St. Peter's Cathedral this morning.
The first bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short, brought with him in 1848, plans for a Cathedral.
The Cathedral was started in 1869 and the first section was completed and opened fully for services in 1877. It was consecrated as St. Peter's Cathedral on January 1st, 1878. Additions to the cathedral continued over the next 33 years with the last section to be completed being the front steps in 1911.
This afternoon I headed to Her Majesty's Theatre to see "Eat, Pray, Laugh - Barry Humphries' Farewell Tour".
Her Majesty's Theatre was built in 1913 and was originally called the Tivoli.
Barry Humphries (born 17 February 1934) is an Australian comedian, satirist, artist, and author. In 1955, he created the remarkable Mrs. Edna Everage, a purple-rinsed Melbourne housewife now known around the world as the gigastar Dame Edna. Humphries won a special Tony Award for his 2000 Broadway offering "Dame Edna, The Royal Tour" and a Tony nomination in 2004 for "Back with a Vengeance". Last March, at aged 78, Humphries announced his retirement from live entertainment, stating that he is "beginning to feel a bit senior" and is looking to retire from show business. The show was excellent and I'm very glad I had this opportunity to see this wonderful performer.
My timing is also very good for another special event happening in Adelaide right now - the World Tour Down Under, which started today in Adelaide and continues over the next week throughout various locations in South Australia. It is the biggest cycling race in the southern hemisphere, with this year being the 15th year of this exciting event.
Today's event was the People's Choice Classic, a 51 kms, closed street circuit race held in east Adelaide as a preview to the Tour Down Under. I managed to find myself a good spot to watch the race - and take a few photos.
Here they are getting ready for the race to start...
And the riders were off!
Walking back to the motel after the race I came across these two cuties enjoying their dinner. They are galahs, or rose-breasted cockatoos. They are one of the most common and widespread cockatoos here in Australia but they usually don't like people getting too close.
The inflatable cyclists are hilarious.
