Pandemic response - Week 96

I would call Week 96 a ‘typical’ winter week at the lake.  Shoreline ice is pretty solid now but the lose ice floes float in and out all depending on temperature and wind.  Some days they’re there - the next day they’re gone.  The beginning and the end of the week gave us some really cold temperatures and an arctic air mass settling in for a couple of days - definitely COLD (to put it mildly!) but it brought with it some gorgeous sunshine and not much wind, so being outside, and even down on the beach, was doable if you were dressed properly.

This is the change in the amount of ice in just a few hours one day.

Despite it really not being packing snow, some of the village children are trying their best anyway.

Some good cold temperatures were all that was needed for this family’s ice rink to be up and running again.

You might remember this stick…At the end of Week 94 there was no shoreline ice and you could still see the sand on the beach.

Pink sky to the east even after sunset - and the moon high up in the sky.

I guess if you can’t be bothered to take down your Hallowe’en decorations, you can always just put a Santa hat on it and call it a Christmas decoration now.

Today was just one of those days that’s incredibly dull.  I know it’s hard to really show that in a photo but thought this might help.  The photo above is an ‘original’ photo - no filters - natural light.  The photo below is taken using a monochrome filter.  Not much difference.

Nope - wouldn’t catch me out there yet!!  Especially because we had temperatures just at the freezing mark this morning.
One of many places where they’re drilling to test the thickness of the ice.

This is why you should never walk on the shoreline ice…here we have a little section of open water - not iced over at all, between the beach and the ice.

At the back of the beach near the bank I found this little waterfall.

It’s my friend ‘Big Rock’!  Not nearly buried under snow but he doesn’t look quite as big surrounded by the ‘ice mountains’.

You have to look far out to the horizon to find the open water today…lots of loose ice!

I know I’ve shown the name of this place before - it’s the shadow I noticed today.

Today the loose ice is out at the horizon - nothing close to shore.

Sunset (above) and then sunrise the next morning (below).

As solid as it looks, it’s constantly cracking, breaking and shifting.

It’s COLD - has to be to create ice crystals on the windows.
