Morrison Dam and the MacNaughton-Morrison Trail

Morrison Reservoir (Morrison Lake) is a 30 acre, human-made reservoir created by the construction of Morrison Dam in 1959 to provide a consistent water supply to a former canning factory in the town of Exeter (about 35 kms from Bayfield) and has now become a thriving lake ecosystem.

There’s more than meets the eye in the Ausable River.  It is actually over 240 kms in length, but because of its meandering course, the mouth is actually only 64 kms from its source.  The river supports a highly diverse aquatic community that has historically supported more than 85 fish species, 26 species of freshwater mussels, and more than 21 reptile species.  This variety of aquatic life makes the Ausable River one of the richest watersheds of its size in Canada.

I started (and ended) today’s walk around Morrison Lake, and then the trail went alongside the Ausable River.

I didn’t have my zoom lens with me - but you might be able to make out the blue heron

I loved this old tree stump!
