Yackandandah and Beechworth

Yackandandah and Beechworth are two smaller communities south of Wodonga, both of which were established in the mid-1800’s when gold was discovered in the area.

Currently with a population of approximately 2,000, the Main Street of Yackandandah is classified by the national trust.

Built in 1878 the Athenaeum contained up to 3,000 books.  It was the social and intellectual centre of the town, with “two reading rooms, a few stuffed birds, and a boomerang or two”.

The former post office, originally built in 1863 with an addition added in 1887.

Built in 1860, this little cottage was the residence for the bank manager and his family.

Yackandandah Motor Garage built in the 1850’s was originally a store and then converted to a carriage showroom.
