Exploring from a height, and then time to leave Manitoulin

Manitoulin Island consists mainly of dolomite as it is a continuation of the Bruce Peninsula and Niagara Escarpment.  This geological rock formation runs south into Niagara Falls and continues into New York. The "Cup and Saucer Trail", which climbs the escarpment provides spectacular lookouts over Manitoulin Island.  The trail is also the highest point on Manitoulin at 352 metres.  The climb was rather steep at times but well worth it!

Just in case you were wondering - yes I really was there

Last stop on the island was at Little Current.  Little Current is the largest community on Manitoulin Island with a population of approx. 1500.  The only land access to Manitoulin is the Little Current swing bridge crossing the North Channel of Lake Huron to the mainland, where the highway continues northward to Espanola.  In summer the swing bridge opens to marine traffic on the hour for 15 minutes from sunrise to sunset, delaying road traffic.

After leaving Manitoulin it was off to Sault Ste. Marie, with a couple of stops along the way.

And now I'm onto the other side of the province of Ontario map!
