Western Brook Pond

The Western Brook Pond is a fjord or lake located in Gros Morne National Park on the west coast of Newfoundland.  It is surrounded by steep rock walls 600m high, having been carved from the surrounding plateau by glaciers which carved the this 1.2 billion-year old block of granite and gneiss.  After the glaciers melted the land rebounded and the fjord was cut off from the sea.  Salty water was eventually flushed from the fjord leaving it fresh.

As you can see, it was overcast with low hanging clouds at times and the sun did also manage to peek through.  Regardless, pictures absolutely don't do it justice, but is the boat trip on Western Brook Pond ever worth it!!

The Bonne Bay Marine Station is located in Norris Point, and allows people to take an interactive tour and observe some of the marine plants and animals that live in Bonne Bay.
An estimated one in 2 million lobsters are blue.  A genetic mutation causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein.  Yellow lobsters are the result of a rare genetic mutation and the odds of finding one are estimated to be 1 in 30 million.  Both can be found, alive and well, at the Bonne Bay Marine Station.

Jaunting off to Newfoundland

It's been a while since I've added anything to my blog so this is really just a test to make sure I can still do it.

I've been hanging out at the cottage for the past few days.  All over the board weather-wise - we've had a few lovely days but also rain, fog, and quite cool temperatures.  Regardless of daytime weather there have been some lovely Lake Huron sunsets though!

I'm heading home in a couple of days to pack and then am going to head to Newfoundland for a couple of weeks.  Check back here to see more of my travels if you're interested.
